Port Destination Guide: Singapore

GUEST POST: Paul and Carole

Singapore is a fascinating destination, we have now visited 3 times and will no doubt return in the future.  We have put this destination guide together to help you make the most of your day.

Marina Bay Area

Head to the Marina Bay area of Singapore, here you will find the Iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the Gardens by the Bay, Merlion and the Singapore Flyer.

The Gardens by the Bay are free to enter and are spectacular in the day and even more so at night with an incredible light show at certain times.

Visit the Marina Bay Sands Hotel which is literally next door and visit the 57th floor. Here you will find the Observation Sky Park which is open until 10pm and gives you the most spectacular views over Singapore, depending on your time in port if you are not sailing until late we would recommend watching the sun go down here and seeing the Singapore skyline light up is something we will never forget. The Singapore flyer is a large observation wheel and is another way to take in the spectacular views in this area

Opposite the iconic Marina Bay Sands is the  Merlion, half-fish and half mermaid, it is a statue that spouts water out of its mouth and is a significant landmark, and the view over to the Marina Bay Sands is pretty spectacular too.

Sentosa Island

Sentosa is an island resort on the southern coast of Singapore. If you fancy a beach day you will find that here and also Universal Studios.  We had a brilliant day out here, fun for all the family, roller coaster rides, water rapids and excellent shows.

Raffles Hotel

When in Singapore a visit to the Raffles Hotel is a must. Sipping a Singapore Sling in the long bar is not cheap but a great experience, the jugs of beer went down well too.

Clarke Quay

Clarke Quay is an area in Singapore that is full of restaurants and bars, and a fun place to explore. The G-Max Reverse Bungee at Clarke Quay throws you 60 metres in the air reaching speeds of 200 kmph and 5G of force. We happily just watched this one, but if your after an adrenaline rush this could be for you.

Jumbos restaurant is famous for its Chilli Crab and we can confirm it was delicious! Clarke Quay is also where you can get a Bumboat tour where you can hop on and off and visits Boat Quay and Marina Bay.

Chinatown

Check out the temples, museums and street markets. The smells, colours and taste are a feast for all senses, it gets very busy and mad, but just pick a spot, grab a bite to eat and watch the world go by, a great experience!

Little India

This is such a vibrant area of Singapore, full of colour with endless shopping opportunities. Full of atmosphere and fabulous food it really is worth a visit.

Transport

There are plenty of transport option to explore Singapore, there is Hop on Hop off buses, taxis that are very reasonable and the MRT Train system is also very easy to use. Whatever you choose to do with your time in port, we know you will have fun exploring this wonderful destination and we hope this information will help you make the most of your day!

Emma says:

Thanks for this you two. It looks like you had an incredible time. I am heading to Singapore in April but don’t think that we will have any time in the city to explore which is a shame.

I hope to see the gardens by the bay at least. Not sure I fancy that crab though!

Make sure you check out the rest of our port destination guides here!

We are always on the look out for guest bloggers here at Cruising Isn’t Just For Old People. If you have a favourite port or cruise line/ship, why not let the world know! More about that here.
