Lunatique Review (Run Time, Drinks, Value & More) Norwegian Luna

Note: I was onboard Norwegian Luna for a launch press trip. All opinions are my own.

I’ve just disembarked a cruise where I went to see a show that really pushed me out of my comfort zone. The show was a prime example of something that is ‘good’ but at the same time, really not for me.

That is what I love so much about cruising though, there is so much variety and something to suit everybody.

The show is called Lunatique and it’s described as being an adult only, interactive show. Usually, the word ‘interactive’ has me running a mile, but as I was on the ship’s first ever sailing and had the chance to go to the first ever show, I knew that I had to give it a go.

It was quite unlike anything I have ever seen before. I’m glad I went. In this post I’ll cover who it’s good for and answer frequently asked questions.

Even the cocktails on the menu have adult-themed names!

What Does it Cost?

The LunaTique show currently costs $44.99 per person (including gratuities). The ticket price includes:

  • Entry to the adults-only (21+) immersive experience.
  • Four speciality cocktails served during the performance.
  • A souvenir glass.

You are able to pre-request mocktail versions if you’d prefer, but that doesn’t come with a discount. Not that I’d expect to, you’re really paying for access to an event which is limited, rather than the actual costs of the drinks.

I have been on a few cruises in the past where I have seen paid for extra shows, some on Cunard, Princess and MSC. It isn’t abnormal and as long as it is an extra and it isn’t replacing the regular entertainment around the ship. I don’t mind at all.

Personally I see it as a benefit because if people are going to shows like this, which I wouldn’t normally go to, that means they aren’t in the rest of the ship and I can watch the standard theatre shows or listen to live music with less guests around.

A “No-Show” Fee of $10.00 may apply if you do not show up and fail to cancel your reservation at least two hours before the performance.

When Norwegian describe LunaTique, they say:

Immerse yourself in an interactive, character-driven experience where our vibrant troupe of circus performers take centre stage. Sip themed cocktails and get wild whilst enjoying this lively, pop-infused experience where the characters are as outlandish as the show itself. Ages 21+.

Norwegian Cruise Line

I was nervous reading the above, I really don’t like audience participation!

What is The Run Time?

The show itself took around an hour.

Doors opened 30 minutes before showtime and there was a long line of people waiting. It was a popular event to attend and great fun to be one of the first people ever seeing the show.

What Are The Costumes Like?

I love a bit of musical theatre, and I also love stage performances with colourful and elaborate costumes.

This show didn’t disappoint there.

The costumes are designed by Brooklyn-based duo JAMES+AC (James Nguyen and A.C. Gottlieb), known for their work with pop star Chappell Roan.

The show reimagines classic circus characters, such as ringmasters, acrobats, strong men, and clowns, but casts them as modern, adult personas.

I do want to be clear that this isn’t a circus, there aren’t any circus tricks. It’s purely a theme.

Music & Dancing

The show was mostly a singing/dancing kind of show with comedy layered through. It was different parts of songs rather than a performance of a whole song.

The performers were fantastic, they were great singers and dancers and really got into their roles. I’d personally prefer to see them perform in a more traditional setting where I am safely in the audience, but that’s just me.

Most people who go to this show like and want audience participation.

The Venue

The venue for Lunatique is “The Improv at Sea” bar.

It is quite a small, dark, intimate space. You will find yourself quite close to the entertainers when they are onstage. Performers also roam around the audience, so be aware!

A couple of times the performers touched me on the shoulders, which is totally fine by me but it did make me jump.

The seats are all on a flat surface, so if you are sitting at a table at the back, your view may be obstructed by those in front of you. Arrive early to get good seats!

Booking is Required

You can book your spot either through the NCL App once onboard or via the Norwegian website prior to the sailing.

If pre-booking is full, you can use digital touchscreens throughout the ship or visit the entertainment reservation desk once you board.

Pre-booking of the show depends on your Latitudes tier or stateroom category.

Haven & Suites and Platinum Members & Above can book 26 days prior to sailing.

All Other Guests can book 21 days prior to sailing.

What Happens During The Show?

Expect plenty of ‘adult’ humour and lots of audience participation.

If you know me, you will know I hate audience participation. I asked a crew member where I should sit to avoid being picked, and they advised me well!

I would avoid sitting in the first two rows if you don’t want to participate in the show. Maybe the first three rows if you want to be really sure.

If you are sitting further back and do want to be involved, you can always volunteer.

The laughter in the bar was infectious. Even when I didn’t find something funny, the other audience members did, and we all ended up laughing together.

The show leaned heavily on innuendo and suggestion rather than structured jokes or punchlines.

It felt to me like the jokes were meant to be funny just because they were using adult words or topics. Which was perhaps just not very funny to me because in the UK we’re very used to panel shows, stand up comedy and soaps covering more adult topics. Perhaps this is a UK/US comedy difference, although I do enjoy a lot of US comedy.

This style of comedy just isn’t for me, and that’s okay! It’s a good job we are all different, variety is the spice of life as they say.

But the rest of the audience seemed to find it really funny. I’ve seen many great reviews since I went and those around me all seemed to enjoy it.

There is no interval and the drinks are staggered across the hour.

The show held my attention throughout, and other audience members, particularly those who were volunteering to take part, seemed to really enjoy the whole spectacle.

The cocktails were a fun novelty. This one came in a jam jar, and you had to pour it into your glass.

Would I Recommend Going?

It was certainly a memorable experience, and for the right person, yes. I spoke to many people after the show who said that they loved it and it was the highlight of their time on the ship.

It definitely isn’t for me, but I knew that before I went. If you read the description and think you’ll enjoy it, it’ll live up to your expectations.

You need to book up quickly if you do want to go.

The Improv At Sea bar isn’t a large venue, and you might find you can’t get a ticket if you don’t do it as soon as you get onboard.

I’m so glad that I got the chance to see the show, it confirmed to me what I love so much about cruising, there is so much variety. Especially on a big cruise ship like Norwegian Luna.
