What I Do With Dirty Clothes On A Cruise (Most People Don’t)

Cruise cabins are small… and keeping them organised makes a huge difference.

At home, you might have a massive laundry basket to hide dirty washing away in. You might have a chair piled with clothes that are not dirty enough to wash but not clean enough to put away. You might be lucky enough to have a laundry chute – or you might just leave dirty laundry lying around!

There is unlikely to be any room for any of that in your cabin, and the space can get cluttered up quickly.

Aurora inside cabin storage
P&O’s Aurora is an older ship with plenty of storage for clothes and cases.

One thing I always do that surprises people is that I put my dirty clothes straight back into my suitcase after I’ve worn them.

Why I Do It

  • It Keeps The Cabin Tidy
    • There are no piles of clothes building up.
    • Everything stays neatly tucked away and is easy to manage
  • It Stops Things Getting Mixed Up
    • Clean versus worn is very clear; clean is in the wardrobe, dirty is in the case.
    • No digging through random piles trying to remember what’s what.
  • It Makes Packing At The End Way Easier
    • You’re basically packed already. You might want to roll some things up, or stack them more neatly in your case, when you pack to make more room, but basically, it’s all there already.
  • Anything that is clean and I haven’t worn, I pop into a packing cube to keep it separate.
    • I can then put clean clothing straight away when I’m home, rather than washing something that’s already clean.

This system works very well for me, I can just put all the dirty clothes straight into the washing machine when I get home.

Cabins really don’t have a lot of extra space, particularly the cheaper ones I tend to book. This simple system makes life and laundry so much more simple!

Mia Tui Packing Cubes
I always use packing cubes. It makes packing and unpacking simple and easy.

The only time I don’t do this is if I get some free laundry as a perk with my Cruise line loyalty status.

Why do your own washing when the cruiseline will do it for you? I simply cram as much as I can into their laundry bag to get as much as possible washed.

When it is returned, I stack it into a packing cube and take it home clean and ready to wear.

Hudson packing cubes
I take a whole set of Captain Hudson packing cubes – underwear in one, t-shirts in another, dresses in another, etc., etc…
