Imagine eating your dinner in a cruise ship dining room, and all of a sudden your waiter jumps on a table and starts dancing!
That isn’t a one-off thing when you sail with Carnival Cruises, it’s a daily occurrence!
In this post, we look at which ships do it, when it happens, why they do it – and what passengers think.

Which Cruise Line Does This?
Carnival Cruise Line is the only line known for dancing waiters.
It’s Part of the “Fun Ship” vibe they’re famous for.
Table dancing doesn’t just happen on one or two ships in the fleet. It is ship-wide.
Any waiter who wants to get a job on a Carnival Cruise ship will be expected to dance!

When and Where Do the Waiters Dance?
This happens in the main dining room during dinner.
It usually happens once per evening sitting, so the waiters have to do it at least twice, at both the early and the late sitting.
It happens between courses, and the staff have been choreographed to dance to the music. This can be modern pop music, classics or something special on themed nights.

What Kind of Dancing Are We Talking About?
The waiters have full choreographed routines. They stand on tables, spin trays and wave napkins around!
Some routines are iconic and used across the fleet (e.g. “Hot Hot Hot”)
Sometimes the music is themed – on the 80s night or Caribbean night, etc.
Why Does Carnival Do This?
It’s part of their “entertainment-first” approach.
They aim to create a casual atmosphere, filled with fun, laughter, and plenty of interaction with their guests.
It makes dinner time feel like a show, not just an ordinary meal.
It is something that guests are unlikely to forget, and Carnival want their cruises to be memorable to their passengers.

What Do Guests Think Of It?
Many love it, especially families and first-time cruisers. They might be disappointed if they go on to sail with other cruise lines and this doesn’t happen!
Some find it cheesy or too much, but that’s fine. There is no need to join in, but you can dance if you would like to.
For many younger cruisers, it is a perfect TikTok/Instagram moment.

Can You Avoid It If You Want To?
If you don’t want to get involved in any of this, you can eat at the buffet, go to a speciality restaurant or have room service.
If you have a flexible dining option, rather than set dining, you could try to eat late or early to avoid peak performance times.
It is worth seeing at least once – some people love it, others hate it.

Is Carnival the Only Line That Does This?
Others might have the occasional “theme night” – like MSC, Costa, or Ambassador, where they parade a Baked Alaska and wave napkins – but this is usually only on one night of the cruise. I have never seen anyone dancing on tables before.
Carnival does it daily – it’s their thing.
Most other lines keep dining a bit more formal or quiet – no dancing involved!
Final Thoughts
Whether you join in or sit back and watch, Carnival’s dancing waiters are part of the fun theme. They promote themselves as being “The fun ships” after all!
It’s one of those “only on a cruise” things that you are bound to remember once you have experienced it. – Love it or cringe at it, you’ll certainly remember it!
