Many people – particularly those in the UK – have heard of Saga Cruises.
Saga Cruises is a small British cruise line headquartered in Folkestone, England, that caters exclusively to travellers aged 50 and over.
They have been in the cruise market since the 1990’s, although the company itself is far older. They have been selling land-based holidays for over 75 years.
The common assumption about Saga cruises is that it is “the cruise line for over-50s” – so most people assume everyone onboard must be at least 50.
That’s almost right, but there’s an important exception.
Saga cruises are designed for people aged 50 and over, but a travelling companion or family member accompanying them can be 40 or over.
This means someone in their 40s can absolutely cruise with Saga – they just can’t generally book as the qualifying passenger.

The Saga Fleet
Saga have a small fleet of modern, well-appointed ocean and river ships.
Ocean Fleet:
Saga operates two boutique, all-balcony-cabin ships: Spirit of Discovery (launched in 2019) and Spirit of Adventure (launched in 2021). Each ship takes up to 987 guests.
River Fleet:
Saga has three European river ships – Spirit of the Rhine, Spirit of the Danube, and Spirit of the Moselle, with a new ship, Spirit of the Lorelei, due to launch in 2027.

What Is the Minimum Age for taking a Saga Cruise?
The main guest/qualifying passenger must be 50+.
A travelling companion can be 40+.
AGE QUALIFICATION
Saga Cruises
Saga cruises are for anyone aged 50 or over. A travelling companion or
family member travelling with you may be aged 40 or over.
For example:
- A 55-year-old travelling with a 45-year-old partner is perfectly acceptable.
- A 70-year-old travelling with a 42-year-old daughter is also fine.
- Two 45-year-olds travelling together cannot book.
- A 55-year-old travelling with a 35-year-old is not acceptable; the accompanying guest must be over 40.
Do Both Passengers Have to Be Over 50?
No. One traveller can be in their 40s, as long as they travel with someone who qualifies.
Saga’s “over 50s” branding understandably makes people think otherwise, and you might be missing out on a fabulous Saga cruise when you don’t need to!
Can Someone Under 40 Cruise With Saga?
No, the companion exception starts at 40.
This isn’t like some adult-only cruise lines where the minimum age is simply 18 or 21.
Saga has deliberately positioned itself for an older adult demographic.
I would love to go on a Saga cruise – the new ships look fantastic. Unfortunately, I am too young to book one, even if I were accompanying one of my parents.
(Even if I were old enough, I think a fight might break out, as both of my parents would want to come with me!)
Ocean ships have all-balcony cabins, and although the initial fares are expensive, they include so much. It is a fully inclusive experience.
Is There an Upper Age Limit?
No. There is no upper age limit.
Passengers do still need to meet any health/travel requirements relevant to their booking.
If you are fit and healthy enough to travel and are over 50, you can sail with Saga. Travel insurance is included in the fare, and this is a big bonus for older passengers.
Are Saga Cruises Adult Only?
Yes, but in Saga’s case “adult only” doesn’t tell the whole story.
Most adult-only cruise lines accept passengers from 18 and up. Saga certainly doesn’t do that.
Saga is different because its minimum age is far higher.
Virgin Voyages, for example, advertises itself as an adult-only cruise line. For them, adult-only means anyone 18 or older.
A Virgin Voyages cruise is a world away from a Saga cruise in terms of entertainment, onboard atmosphere and passenger demographics.
There is nothing to say someone over 50 wouldn’t enjoy a Virgin Voyages cruise, but they have a reputation for having a party atmosphere onboard.
That said, I sailed on Valient Lady recently and saw adults of all ages onboard.
Saga offers a more relaxed, boutique experience.
Discover the big benefits of our small-ship cruises
Saga
Our sister ships offer the best of both worlds. All the luxury of a boutique hotel, but with views from your balcony that change every day. It means you’ll wake up in an exciting new destination, just waiting to be explored.
These elegant smaller ships carry no more than 987 guests on each cruise. It means a less-crowded atmosphere, and high levels of personal service with one member of staff for every two guests.
What Is the Average Age on a Saga Cruise?
The line targets over-50s and so naturally attracts an older passenger demographic.
There will be a range of ages onboard; some reports in the press say that many passengers are in their 70s – but as I can’t take a Saga cruise for myself, I can’t confirm or deny this!
As Saga has a 40+ companion rule, not everybody onboard will necessarily be over 50, but most will be.

Why Does Saga Have an Age Restriction?
Saga has specialised in travel for over-50s for decades – they don’t just specialise in over-50s travel.
They also sell a wide range of insurance, financial services, and lifestyle products tailored specifically for people aged 50 and over – hence all Saga cruises having travel insurance as standard.
(You can remove travel insurance and pay a lower price if you already have an annual policy elsewhere)
Saga cruises are designed around the over-50s market.
The onboard environment is more grown-up – no water slides or rock-climbing walls!
The ocean ships sail interesting, destination-focused itineraries from the UK.
River cruises are fly cruises, with a complimentary nationwide return chauffeur service to the airport.
Saga is a very British cruiseline, but you can still book directly with Saga if you live abroad or don’t hold a UK passport.
There Is So Much Included in the Cruise Fare
Although Saga cruises are never cheap, an awful lot is included in the cruise fare that you normally wouldn’t get:
- A complimentary nationwide return chauffeur service. Your chauffeur will pick you and your bags up and drive you to the port.
- They provide free parking for the duration of your cruise if you prefer to drive yourself.
- Travel insurance is included, with medical screening and cancellation cover.
- A price reduction applies if you do not need it.
- For river cruises and select international itineraries, return flights or Eurostar trains and overseas transfers are included.
- All-inclusive dining – Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and daily afternoon tea across the main dining rooms, casual buffets, and speciality restaurants
- Full room service menu available at any time of day at no extra charge.
- All-inclusive drinks
- House and branded wines, craft beers, draught lagers, premium-brand spirits, cocktails, soft drinks, and daily tea and coffee are included.
- From 2026, every port of call includes one excursion included in the cruise fare.
- This is for both river and ocean cruises.
- Gratuities
- All on-board tips and crew gratuities are already included in the fare.
- Wi-Fi
- Fast Starlink Wi-Fi is included on board.
- All port taxes are included.
I was lucky enough to be invited onboard Spirit of Discovery when she was first launched. I was blown away by their balcony cabins – particularly their solo cabins. Have a look at that here:
Is Saga Only for Retired People?
No. Eligibility depends only on age, not employment or retirement status.
Someone aged 50 who still works full-time qualifies just as much as someone who is retired.
The stereotype that Saga is “only for retirees” isn’t correct.
Can a Travel Agent Book Saga for You?
No, cruises need to be booked directly through Saga. They are the only cruise line I know like this that don’t work with travel agents at all. It’s very strange!
If you are unsure whether your party meets the age rules, they will confirm eligibility before taking your booking.
Money Back Guarantee
Saga are so confident you will love your first cruise with them that, if for any reason you don’t, they will happily refund you. Of course, plenty of terms and conditions apply!
This might give you peace of mind if you are booking your first cruise and are unsure whether cruising is for you.

They are not the only cruise line to offer this. Find out more here:

Holland America are another line that are famous for an older passenger demographic.
