Most cruise passengers assume they have two choices: buy the ship’s Wi-Fi package or stay offline.
In reality, there’s a third option that often works surprisingly well.

The Cruise Internet Trick I Use All The Time
Whenever I’m cruising close to land, I often switch airplane mode off and see if my phone can pick up a normal mobile signal.
Sometimes I get nothing at all. Sometimes I get several hours of perfectly usable 4G.
On some cruises, it’s worked so well that I’ve barely needed Wi-Fi.

The First Thing I Do Before Every Cruise
Before I leave home, I make sure I have a spending cap set with my mobile provider.
For me, this is the most important part of the whole process.
I recommend setting it ridiculously low. Zero, £1, or the lowest your network allows. (With my network, I have a 50p spending cap.)
That way, you can’t end up with a huge bill.
Once that’s in place, I can experiment with mobile data without worrying about nasty surprises later.
My Simple Method: Turn Airplane Mode Off And See What Happens
Most of the time my phone stays in airplane mode.
Whenever I notice we’re sailing close to land, I switch airplane mode off for a minute and see whether I’ve picked up a signal.
That’s literally it.
No apps, no complicated setup, no technical knowledge required.
If I’ve got signal, great. If not, nothing is lost – and no big bill is run up.
Some Cruises Are Better Than Others
How well this works depends entirely on the itinerary.
One of my most successful examples was my cruise on Havila Polaris along the Norwegian coast.

We were rarely far from land, and I had excellent 4G coverage for huge parts of the trip.
At times, it felt more like being on land than being at sea; the coverage was that good.
Cruises through fjords, island chains, coastal routes, and around places like the Mediterranean or British Isles often give you plenty of opportunities to pick up a signal.

Sometimes You Get Hours Of Signal
People often imagine you’ll only get a few minutes here and there.
That certainly happens.
But I’ve also had stretches of time when I stayed connected for hours at a time while sailing.
Messages come through, emails sync, photos upload, and everything works perfectly normally.
It Can Disappear At Any Moment
The downside is that you can never rely on it.
You might have a fantastic signal one minute and nothing the next.
The ship moves, the coastline changes, and suddenly you’re out of range.
You might have a cabin on the sea side of the ship rather than the land side, which doesn’t help.
That’s why I treat it as a bonus rather than something I depend on.
Sometimes It’s Faster Than The Wi-Fi I’ve Paid For
This is the bit that always makes me laugh.
I’ve genuinely had occasions when the 4G connection on land was faster than the cruise Wi-Fi package I’d already paid for.
Cruise internet is shared by thousands of passengers, and speeds can vary dramatically.
A strong 4G signal can sometimes feel noticeably quicker.

The More Advanced Option
If you’re comfortable digging through your phone’s settings, there are more advanced ways to control which networks your phone connects to.
Depending on your device and provider, you may be able to manually select networks, prevent automatic switching, or require approval before joining a different network.
Some experienced cruisers prefer this approach.
Personally, I think the simplest solution is still the best: set a zero or very low spending cap with your provider, then check for signal whenever you’re near land.
Could You Skip Cruise Wi-Fi Entirely?
Yes, definitely.
If you’re on a coastal itinerary and only want to check messages, browse social media, or upload the occasional photo, you may find that mobile data covers a surprising amount of your needs.
I tend to buy the WiFi as I need it for work, and it is a justifiable business expense. The rest of my family never buy the WiFi, they only use free mobile data when they can pick it up at sea, or when they are in port.
On the other hand, if you’re crossing the Atlantic or spending days in open ocean, you’ll probably still want a Wi-Fi package.
The Bottom Line
Whenever I see land, I usually turn airplane mode off and have a look for a signal.
Sometimes there’s no signal at all.
Sometimes I get a few minutes of 4G.
Sometimes I get hours of it, and occasionally it’s even faster than the Wi-Fi I’ve paid for.
