If you are taking a cruise you may be wondering if you can bring alcohol on your cruise. I’ve been on multiple cruises and have encountered a variety of rules regarding alcohol.
On some cruise lines, you can take a certain amount of alcohol onboard, but they will charge you a “Cockage Fee” if you want to drink it in an onboard restaurant. Others ban you from bringing alcohol altogether.
I have put together this guide to simplify the rules of different cruise lines and provide some advice based on my experiences when cruising.
Rules and prices are correct at the time of writing – October 2024
Can You Take Alcohol on a Cruise?
Most cruise lines will allow guests to take onboard some alcohol on embarkation day.
Some cruise lines don’t allow guests to bring any alcohol on board at any point in the cruise, and some have more flexible rules.
This post provides a photo guide to the alcohol policies of all major cruise lines. Drinking ages and corkage fees are also discussed, as well as other alcohol-related frequently asked questions.
Why You Might Have to Pay a ‘Corkage Fee’ on Your Cruise
A corkage fee is a price that cruise lines charge guests to drink alcohol they bought onboard from land.
The corkage fee doesn’t actually have anything to do with the staff uncorking your drink, so you can’t avoid it by opening it yourself.
If you enjoy your drinks in your cabin you normally won’t have to pay the “corkage fee” although some cruise lines do apply a corkage fee to all drinks bought onboard, regardless of where it is consumed.
Only being able to drink in your cabin might not sound ideal, but having a drink on the balcony while sailing away is a great way to start your cruise.
The diagrams below show if there are corkage fees applied to any drinks.

Do Cruise Lines Search Your Luggage For Alcohol?
Cruise lines do search all luggage that comes onto the ship for alcohol. When guests check-in, their luggage is scanned – similar to how luggage is scanned at the airport.
Before embarkation guests walk through a metal detector and have their hand luggage scanned.
Every time you get off in a port and return to the ship your luggage will be scanned again.
It depends on the port as to who scans your luggage. If you’re embarking in a big port the scanning may take place in the terminal building itself.
If you are in a smaller port the security checks may happen on the ship. It is also possible to have security checks in both the terminal and the ship.
Cruise lines are completely within their rights to search anything that you bring on board at any point of the cruise.

9 Things You’re Agreeing to When You Book a Cruise Without Realising
Can You Sneak Alcohol on a Cruise?
Many guests do successfully manage to sneak alcohol onto cruise ships. Popular methods include hiding alcohol in mouthwash bottles and flasks.
In recent years, cruise lines have made it more difficult to sneak alcohol on board, and passengers caught will have the alcohol confiscated.
Royal Caribbean actually says on their website that they search mouthwash bottles!
What Happens if You’re Caught Smuggling Alcohol on a Cruise?
If a guest is caught attempting to bring on too much alcohol on a cruise, the most likely outcome is that the alcohol will be taken away from the guest.
Depending on the cruise line, the guest might get the alcohol back at the end of the cruise, or it might be “destroyed”.
Your Alcohol Will Be Confiscated
I have been on loads of cruises where I have seen alcohol being taken off passengers. It definitely does happen. This isn’t an empty threat.
When you embark a cruise you will have to go through security in the terminal. The security staff check for things like alcohol and dangerous items.
You MIGHT be Allowed to Collect it at The End of The Cruise
Some cruise lines allow you to collect the confiscated alcohol at the end of your cruise. Some do not. Carnival usually does not allow this, they simply “discard” all alcohol.
I’ve been on cruises before where I have seen the table at the end of the cruise where passengers come to collect their confiscated alcohol.
I couldn’t believe how many people had tried to sneak it onboard. I personally don’t think it would be worth the effort at all.
Bringing an extra bottle to the cruise ship, having it confiscated, and taking it all the way home again doesn’t seem like a great idea to me!
Find out the top things confiscated by the cruise lines in the post below:
These Are The 5 Items Most Regularly Confiscated by Cruise Lines
Worse Case Scenario For Alcohol Smugglers!
In a worst-case scenario, the cruise line can refuse to let you board the ship. Royal Caribbeans policy says that it may “disembark or not allow to board” any passengers who are caught trying to sneak alcohol onboard!
This is unlikely to happen, but it is possible. I personally would never risk it and would encourage you not to try either.
Related Questions:
Can You Bring Soda on a Cruise?
The majority of cruise lines do allow guests to bring onboard some soda on embarkation day. It is rare for this to be allowed on any other day of the cruise and there is usually a limit per passenger.
There are some cruise lines where you’re not allowed to bring on any soda at all. I personally very rarely bring my own soda on a cruise. I may bring a bottle or two in my hand luggage but usually purchase a soda package.
How much do drinks cost on a cruise?
The cost of drinks on a cruise is similar to that that you might find in a bar or pub on land.
They generally tend to be on the higher-priced end but the prices really aren’t as crazy as some people fear. On an MSC cruise, you could expect to pay €3.50 for a can of soda or around €7.50 for a beer.
It is worth noting that on a lot of cruise lines, you will have a gratuity automatically added to all bar purchases. It usually isn’t possible to remove these.
Do you need ID to buy alcohol on a cruise?
On most cruises, a guest’s cruise card will be enough to prove their age, but on occasion, guests may have to provide either a passport or driver’s license to confirm they’re of legal drinking age.
Some cruise ship venues which are adult-only may ID passengers at the door.
I took a cruise with Royal Caribbean on the Independence of the Seas and couldn’t believe that guests were having to show their driver’s licenses or passports to get in.
When I was a child and used to cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line they would cut off a corner of my cruise card to show that I was a child. I think this makes sense, it’s difficult to stick it back on!
What Cruise Lines Let You Drink at 18 on a Cruise?
Many cruise lines let guests drink at 18. This depends more on the cruise destination than the nationality of the passenger.
If a cruise is from the North of America, another location where the drinking age is 21 then all guests must be 21 to drink.
This is true regardless of if they are able to drink at 18 in their home country. Similarly, guests from America could be able to drink at 18 on a cruise in Europe if that cruise lines policy has a drinking age of 18.
Cruise Lines that have an 18 as a drinking age in some destinations may have a 21-year age limit when sailing to others. They follow the drinking rules of the region they are sailing in.
