Back to The Future The Musical is Coming To Royal Caribbean!

I am so excited to let you know that my favourite musical of all time, Back to the Future is expected to be coming to Star of the Seas!

I LOVE Royal Caribbean’s musicals and can’t wait to see this. I’ve seen Back to The Future on land 5 times so this really is combining my favourite things about land and sea.

I’m definitely a little obsessed with this musical, but it’s fantastic.

Back to the Future: The Musical

Though Royal Caribbean hasn’t yet made an official announcement, it does seem like Back to the Future: The Musical will be part of the entertainment on the cruise line’s new ship, Star of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean Productions posted an open casting call for the musical, suggesting that the show is planned for the ship, which is currently under construction.

Both their Facebook page and website reveal that auditions will take place next month, and the successful performers will be part of this production.

What Will The Show Be Like?

Theatre shows on cruise ships are usually pretty similar to theatre shows on land. The difference being that you don’t have to buy a ticket and can sit wherever you want!

They are sometimes a little shorter but other than that they remain unchanged.

In the land production of Back to the Future the DeLorean car flies up and even goes upside down at one point. It is SERIOUSLY impressive.

Time will tell if they can pull this off at sea.

When Are Auditions?

The casting notice confirms that the musical will be performed 3-4 times per week on Star of the Seas, in addition to a separate Royal Caribbean Signature Production.

Auditions are set to be held in London, UK.

About Back to the Future: The Musical

Based on the 1985 film, Back to the Future The Musical follows the journey of teenager Marty McFly as he is accidentally transported from 1985 to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean, invented by scientist Doc Brown.

2014:

  • The idea for a musical adaptation was first publicly announced. Bob Gale, the original film’s co-writer, was involved from the start.

February 20, 2020Manchester, UK:

  • The musical premiered at the Manchester Opera House for a pre-West End run. This marked the first live performance of the musical. It was initially planned for a limited run, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the production had to close prematurely in mid-March 2020.

August 20, 2021West End, London:

  • The musical made its official West End debut at the Adelphi Theatre in London. The musical won Best New Musical at the 2022 Olivier Awards.

June 30, 2023Broadway, New York:

  • The musical officially opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre.

I have to admit I wasn’t a big fan of the movie before watching the musical, but now I love it.

The musical sticks closely to the original plot, it just adds new songs and some extra humour. It is also updated a little.

The show has become known for its stage design and special effects, particularly when it comes to the time travel scenes.

Fans of the movie will recognise key moments recreated for the stage, including the high-stakes chase scenes and the famous “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance.

The musical also features lots of fantastic original songs, such as “It’s Only a Matter of Time” and “Put Your Mind to It,” written specifically for the stage production.

Last year, on my Spotify wrapped, which shows my top played songs, 8/10 were from this musical!

Since its debut, Back to the Future The Musical has earned widespread acclaim, including two Tony Award nominations: one for Best Featured Actor in a Musical and another for Best Set Design of a Musical.

It’s my favourite musical of all time and I can’t wait to see it at sea.
